Potrero Chico Itinerary

World-class vertical limestone routes

Potrero Chico is one of the world’s most distinctive limestone climbing areas, known for its dramatic vertical walls and striking canyon setting. The crags feature highly featured grey and orange limestone with pockets, edges, cracks, and the occasional tufa, offering varied movement that often feels more three-dimensional than typical sport climbing. Routes tend to be long for their grade, with excellent rock quality and plentiful fixed protection.

The climbing is typically vertical to slightly overhanging, with good rests and sequences that reward balance and technique. Multi-pitch lines ascend soaring faces with spectacular exposure, while single-pitch routes cluster at the base of the canyon and along roadside sectors, making approaches generally short and straightforward. This combination of world-class limestone, dramatic scenery, and easy logistics has made Potrero Chico a celebrated international destination.

What to bring

• Climbing shoes you’re comfortable wearing for extended periods (eg on multiple pitches). Consider bringing a looser pair for multi-pitch days and a tighter pair for other days, but this isn’t critical.
• Approach (hiking) shoes as many of the approaches are on uneven terrain. A light hiking shoe will suffice, but Crocs will not.
